The puppies had another bath today and a nail trim. They have been getting a bath every couple days since they started on solid food but now they are able to eat without wearing as much of their meal. They are a lot more coordinated and are doing great with the crunchy food too. They are still nursing 2-3 times a day but Bella is wanting to be away from them more often than not now, she is beginning the weaning stage. During this time we continue to give the puppies food softened with puppy milk replacer at mealtimes and crunchy dry food and fresh water available at all times.
At 4 weeks old the puppies are now out of the whelping box and beginning to explore a little further. They are starting to try their teeth on crunchy dry food in addition to the softened food and they have had their second de-worming treatment.
I'm sorry I'm a bit late with this update, I know everyone is excited to see new up close pictures of the puppies so I will have individual portraits very soon.
The puppies are 3 weeks old today and they are very different from the puppies of last week, these little cuties can now stand up and walk without dragging their bellies, they can also see and hear more clearly and are beginning to play with each other.
They had their first taste of solid food today softened with unsalted turkey broth and as you can see they were very ready.
Another cool thing is that the puppies have actually started potty training, you may see some of the newspaper that covers half of the box, they will go off the blanket and go to the paper to potty even at this very young age.
A few renegade puppies are too cool for their collars and I just can't keep one on them. Hope you enjoy the video!
I was finally able to finish getting pictures that show everyone with their eyes open. You can see some black spots on the noses of some of the pups, they are born with pink noses that gradually turn black as they mature.
Wow! has it been two weeks already? These past two weeks have been a whirlwind of bottle feedings and playing the puppy rotation game to try to give Bella as much time to rest as possible. She is a fantastic mama and is taking it all in stride.
At two weeks old the puppies have just started opening their eyes. It usually takes a few days before both eyes are fully opened. Once opened, the eyes appear cloudy, but they will clear up over the next week. There are a few pups who still haven't finished opening their eyes at the time of these photos so I will wait another day or two for them and update again. Everyone develops in their own time, and they look so much cuter once they open those little eyes.
The puppies are also beginning make their first attempts to stand up on their legs instead of crawling on their belly, they spend a lot of time wobbling and falling over too!
